![]() ![]() Eliminate all damaged pieces from the ceiling – Make sure the ceiling is dry before you start repairing.How to repair a water damaged plaster ceiling Ensure you clean out the area, remove all water and excessive moisture to prevent mould growth, cover the floors with newspaper or plastic covers (whatever you have) to protect it, and provide good ventilation by opening the windows. Prepare the area for repairment – Now that you have the situation under control and, hopefully, the source of the problem fixed, you can move on to repairing the ceiling.Make sure you have a bucket and that the floor is fully protected before you do it. If the latter happens, it is best to poke a small hole into the sagging ceiling to release the collected water. That’s not the case with plaster, though, which tends to detain the water until it’s soaked up and then release it. Drywall ceilings can absorb water, so there is a little chance of dripping unless there is major damage. Assess the damage – Thoroughly inspect the affected area and try to locate where the water is coming from.Lay down towels and place buckets, and other containers suitable to collect the water dripping from the ceiling. Remove your belongings – Move furniture further away from the wet areas and try to absorb as much of the liquid as possible before it damages the flooring.Plaster or drywall, a leaking ceiling is a serious matter, and you need to take measures right away to protect your property. It’s better to contact a specialist for inspection and not risk your health in the process. With this dining room ceiling I also applied Wallrock lining paper to 1) strengthen the ceiling 2) create an even smoother finish and 3) eliminate the chance of old wallpaper paste contaminating the ceiling paint.Pro tip: We don’t advise you to climb to see for yourself, especially if the weather conditions are bad and the surface is wet and slippery.Wearing a mask, use 120G – 180G sandpaper to lightly sand the filler, making sure not sand too much as this lose the smoothness and may expose scrim tape causing an unwanted bubble effect.Repeat this process another two times, ideally it will need 3 coats of filler to get the desired smooth finish. ![]() Apply the Easifill to the scrim tape and screw heads, making sure the filler is smoothed off with the ceiling, as applying it too thick and sanding it all down can be a headache. Ideally you should use a 6 inch jointing knife to apply the Easifill while your other taping knife or hawk is holding the filler. Scrim tape will help prevent the filler cracking with normal house movement. You would apply the tape so that one strip of tape follows a crack or joint while fully covering them. Apply scrim tape to all the joints (internal corners, joints between the boards and even on top of bonding coat where the joint between the plasterboard and original plaster are). ![]() The plasterboard and original plaster need a 5mm gap between them to withstand general house movement, reduce the chance of cracking and prevent the plaster blowing.
